We learn about Foos and hisobsession with observing human sexuality in the name of "scientific research," from the late 1960s through the mid-1980s. But, assuming that he was indeed planning to write about Foos, there is surely something objectionable about waiting until both men were out of legal danger before cashing in on the story. Taleses commitment to embedding himself into his stories, then, seems to be a flimsy excuse for him to satisfy his own sexual needs. And the adorable model of the motel they use to show how Foos spied on his customers is a twee representation of what was essentially a crime scene. But what is almost more stunning than the violation is Talese's failure to reflect on it in any way that is not perfunctory. It could have included abuse, but is always likely to have been abnormal. In one particularly tense--but also comic--scene, we see Talese become incensed with Foos for having disclosed information to the documentarians in a private interview, and proceed to give Foos a mini-lecture on journalistic ethics.
